screenshot0174Name: Best Menu,

Description: System Tool, Shortcut Menu,

Summary: With the lists of applications steadily growing it makes sense to have shortcuts for your Nokia N96 to your most popular applications. Best Menu is an application to help speed up usage of the Nokia N96 by creating a customisable list that includes Applications, Messages, Calender, Contacts and your Call Log. All of these can be edited to included any Files, emails and notes that you use regularly. As this is an application to increase availability of your most used items but that would pointless if you had to go in to applications to open it so they implemented a really good short key which is holding the call/green button for 2 seconds. While all these features are great none are new and exciting but I left the best feature till the end and that feature is Macros. Macros are used lots in PC‘s and they are use to insert pre-written text. As far as I know this is the first application for your Nokia N96 that can do this and it can make things like you email address or any other information that you have to repeatedly put in very easy.

Overview: While using this application I couldn’t find a single problem with it, the only little nags I have with it are one is that the application is a bit hard to figure out how to use it, second is that it cost $9.95. The cost is well worth the application you get but everything is better when its free. I’m sure the 15 day trial will show you its potential but with the cost I’m not sure how many people will buy it. As far as application of this type this is one of the best if not the best. Nokia N96 App Review – Chromatic Tuner

screenshot0168Name: Chromatic Tuner

Description: Instrument Tuner

Summary: As the Nokia N96 is becoming more and more popular also the applications have been developing to suit the different type of people who use them. Chromatic Tuner is application designed for musicians so they can tune their instruments to the different notes. It can also tell you information about the sound like the frequency and level which make the application quite precise. Other things that are good with this application is its response time which is able to calculate many different levels within seconds. All in all this application makes your Nokia N96 almost as good as the real device, but I’m just not sure that the mic on the Nokia N96 is good enough to be completely reliable.

Overview: I come from quite a musical country (Ireland) so I know loads of people who will love this application, to be honest I didn’t thing this type of application was possible as it requires a quality mic. For anyone who plays an instrument this application is great and its free so it requires a unique level of retardation to miss it, of course that only applies to musicians. Read more

Nokia N96 App Review – DEdit

Name: DEdit

Description: Text Editor, File Manager

Summary: Lots of applications for the Nokia N96 are inspired by computer software but one key area that phones have yet to accomplish is multitasking, making it hard to edit mutable files. DEdit is a text editor with a difference, not only can it find, edit and save files and text but it can do it to multiple files using different windows or “tabs”. Having the ability to do this is only half the battle, the other half is implementing it in a way that allows the users to be able to use the application with out hassle. DEdit has loads of shortcuts that allow for easy access to all of its features and is able to read many different file types, making it perfect for performing large tasks. I think the ability to write in HTML which makes it very handy to use if you post anything online. Another nice effect has is how it remembers your recently used file even if you are running a different application.

Overview: I’m a little disappointed with this application because its just not a smooth as one would hope also the learning curve of this application is quite steep. As this application is free I won’t complain about it too much and the amount of abilities and usage really depends on what the user is able to do. For anyone who needs to edit documents on their phone this application is perfect but will have very limited effect for people who don’t. Its worth a check to see how you could use it even if you don’t think you need it. Read more

Nokia N96 N-gage Review – AMF Bowling

screenshot01541Name: AMF Bowling

Genre:  Sport

Summary: N-gage has been trying to release a bunch of games recently which are all much bigger and seem to have much more detail in certain areas. AMF Bowling is the latest N-gage game for the Nokia N96 and is a relatively big at 17MB at installation. AMF Bowling as a game has its ups and downs, the “ups” are the graphics with lots of detail for the locations and players also it requires a knack to be good at this game split second control means the difference between hitting them and getting a strike. The multiplayer is set to be probably the most competitive N-gage arena game yet. The bad points are the lack of realism in the sense that it appears that no location seems to be in a bowling ally, they all seem to be in abstract places also the game has trouble running smoothly. Another down side is that the single player doesn’t look that great.

Overview: AMF Bowling has gotten lots of mixed reviews so I guess its up to you to decided if you want it. I will say that normally I don’t like bowling games but as far as bowling games go this is one of my favorite one because I couldn’t find a sure way to get a strike. Recently the games have had a very detailed menu and AMF Bowling is the same but the game play graphics still need to improve, I thing soon nokia will come up with a more powerful phones that will have graphics like the “Nintendo DS” but we will have to wait a few years for that. Nokia N96 App Review – GPS Utilities

Name: GPS Utilities

Description: GPS software

Summary: The GPS receiver is one of the many features that made me interested in the Nokia N96, but it isn’t used as much as it could be. Remember GPS is free data stream so with t he rght tools you can use your GPS to find where you are and where your gong and even how fast your going. GPS Utilities gives you the abilities to give you loads of information about where you are and where your going and it is able to apply that information on to a map so you’ll never be lost. GPS Utilities is one of the most popular GPS software and is very useful if you ever go travelling or just need to know where to go.

Overall: There are many applications that do the exactly the same but this is the most popular and form what I could tell it works the best too. GPS Utilities  really optimises the GPS receiver and it makes it much more stable which makes it more enjoyable to use. There are a few bad points which are the cost (£20) and the lack of features. The price is very high for an application but if you check out the trial you will see the quality that comes with it Read more

Nokia N96 App Review – Nice light

screenshot0148

Name: Nice Light

Description: Background light controller

Summary: The Nokia N96 has a few features that make it more desirable and these little things even thought they don’t improve the phone they do open up some opportunities. The features that I am talking about now are the stand and the dual led, they don’t get that much use but its nice to have them. Nice Light is an application that controls the flashlight and screen brightness, which is not a new idea so you can check out “Light control” if you don’t like this application. Nice Light is designed as a night light so what it does is turn up the brightness of you screen and turns on the dual led or you can just set it to do one of them. This is where the stand comes in letting you rest your phone at an angle so that makes a really good light for reading. This application has another little trick which is it can display the time in a full screen mode which can be set up with the stand to make an active night clock. With all this extra power required its advisable to use your charger, nice light has thought of that and created an option that will track when you plug in your charger so that it can provide a much more economical operation.

Overview: The only reason I like this application is because it can become a night clock when is charging which I think is a really handy idea and this phone is the perfect one to do it with because of the stand. However this application cost $9 but honestly I downloaded the trial and it didn’t seem to have any limitations at all or even a timer so I don’t really know whats up with that even thought they say it has a 7 day limitation. Anyway this application works smoothly and is recommended if you want a night clock. Read more

Nokia N96 Theme Review – Mono

screenshot0144

Name: Mono

Creator: PiZero

Summary: PiZero has been making Themes for a while now and is regarded as one of the best theme creators out there. Mono is one of his latest themes and first impressions are very good the white text on the blue background look very neat especially in text messages and menus. There are lots of little nice effects that come with this theme like the while line at the bottom and the landscape view are pretty good. There is one serious problem and that is the icons which indervidually look good but all of them are kind of identical making the whole display very very bland. You can install the default icons but the colours just don’t go that well.

Overview: PiZero is a big boy in theme creation but a some of his best themes have a price, mono is his latest free theme and I think that effected his effort because the way all the icons look makes me dislike this theme. On a side note I would like to add that PiZero released a very nice theme called Pulsar but that cost €4 but is worth checking out. Never the less this theme is nice and is a bit different form what you normally see and is worth a download. Read more

Nokia N96 App Review – Ovi Maps 3.0

screenshot0141

Name: Ovi Maps

Description: Satellite Navigation System

Summary: Ovi maps 3.0 or Nokia Maps 3.0 has been in a beta for a while now and even though its not out of beta yet it is in the final beta version. The update from nokia maps 2.0 to Ovi Maps 3.0 is a big one but it might not look like anythings changed except for some 3D models of some places of interest and a much better zoom ability. So why is it such a big update? what has really been updated is the map data and other things that helps your nokia N96 find its way either walk, driving or taking public transport. Ovi Maps has a few other tricks like being able to view the weather of the place you are viewing. All in all it seems nokia maps has be reborn as navigation application rather a world viewing application that was adapted.

Overview: I think that Ovi maps 3.0 is pretty good everything seems to work fine. Installation is a bit of a processes and any map or licence you buy now won’t be compatible with the final release so you mite want to wait till they release that but they say that both versions should work just the same. In any case I find Ovi Maps much better than before but it still has a few little problems. Read more

Nokia N96 N-gage Review – Dance Fabulous

screenshot0129

Name: Dance Fabulous

Genre: Arcade

Summary: In recent times a lot more  hype is around N-gage games, Dance Fabulous has been hyped about for a good while now and it has now been released ahead of schedule. The very first thing you will notice is the size and this blows away most N-gage games because its 30MB where as most N-gage game don’t go over 5mb. The point of Dance Fabulous is as any Dancing game, basically make you dancer move in the best way. A few things it prides itself on is customization which is almost unlimited, the key that I see to this game is its ability to let you dance along with your own music so your not listening to some crap that’s 10 years old. Dance Fabulous only costs £4/€5 which is very cheap for a game of this size. The graphics and sound effects are perfect giving the game a really quality feel and has been give the highest rating so far in the N-gage arena.

Overview: Lets be honest, not that many people are going to be interested in this game. In a whole the game is very flashy which is nice to see come from nokia but I think unless you ware a skirt then you should pass on this game, if however you like the idea of the game then you really should check it out because it is a good game. To play this game you need the latest version of N-gage(1.20-1459) which you can download from below. If you where thinking of trying out the trial, Don’t because its a waste of time all in all you get about 1 minute of play time and about 30 seconds of that is dancing. I will post a link to a video of the full version in action.

Name: Personality Psychology Pro

Description: Personality analyzer

Summary: First this application is only for fun it has no purpose, I say its fun but really its the funnest application available for your Nokia N96Personality Psychology Pro asks you questions all about yourself and your life style and after all that it give you a graph and explains the results. When I call it “the funnest application” I mean it will keep you entertained the longestPersonality Psychology Pro has over 1,000 questions as well as games and images. The most interesting thing about this application is the questions which have about 32 categories which range in questions that will either make you laugh or think. With Personality Psychology Pro you can set up different profiles for your friends so you can compare and joke around.

Overview: This application is still making me laugh, it will ask you ridiculous questions that you would never expect to be asked. The controls are easy using simple keypad shortcuts but when ever you have to put in text a qwerty keyboard pops up. Personality Psychology Pro cost $9.95 but it is one of enjoyable application out there. I would recommend you check out the trial to see what I’m talking about. In the full version you will be surprised with all the little extras like stories and your favourite animal or colour.
