Description: GPS Navigation Software

Summary: Theres plenty of Navigation software avaible on the market but they can take up a lot of space or you can go with an online based one like google maps, but that dosen’t take into account traffic, roadworks ect.. so what can you use. Waze is a navigation software for all kinds of devices but only a few symbian devices but luckily the Nokia N96 is one of the symbian phones that it works on. Waze is like no other navigation software because what it will do is find your location and then you input your destination and it will direct you, but if another Waze user is stuck in traffic or there’s road works or a policeman along your route then waze will automatically redirect you.

Overview: Theres one fatal flaw with Waze and that is that it need more users to make it more accurate, but if they are lucky then it will be a really handy application. First Waze is so far only active in the US but theres no reason it can’t be used everywhere else. Waze is a free application be dose want you to register and you have to download the application on your phone. Waze works perfectly and it would be great if everyone dose there part.

Description: GPS Map

Summary: Since google came out with its free maps there have been a good few competitors but they never seem to be able to beat Google Maps.EasyMap is another application based on openstreetmap map style and is know for its uasablity and speed. EasyMap uses your gps to find your location and displays the street maps of the local environment and show you the local services you mite need like trains and buses. EasyMap is built for quality and speed but the speed seems to be missing, but the quality of the application more than enough to get you to forget that.

Overview: Well EasyMap is a nice looking application but really lacks function, EasyMap only has the abiltiy to look a the map, no navigation and no search. With the lack of functions you would wonder why the creators want 13$ for it, but if you want to try out the demo then it will last 14 days and will let you see a few of the good points. Truthfully this application has no noticeable value, better to stick with google maps.

Description: GPS software

Summary: The GPS receiver is one of the many features that made me interested in the Nokia N96, but it isn’t used as much as it could be. Remember GPS is free data stream so with t he rght tools you can use your GPS to find where you are and where your gong and even how fast your going. GPS Utilities gives you the abilities to give you loads of information about where you are and where your going and it is able to apply that information on to a map so you’ll never be lost. GPS Utilities is one of the most popular GPS software and is very useful if you ever go travelling or just need to know where to go.

Overall: There are many applications that do the exactly the same but this is the most popular and form what I could tell it works the best too. GPS Utilities really optimises the GPS receiver and it makes it much more stable which makes it more enjoyable to use. There are a few bad points which are the cost (£20) and the lack of features. The price is very high for an application but if you check out the trial you will see the quality that comes with it

Name: Ovi Maps

Description: Satellite Navigation System

Summary: Ovi maps 3.0 or Nokia Maps 3.0 has been in a beta for a while now and even though its not out of beta yet it is in the final beta version. The update from nokia maps 2.0 to Ovi Maps 3.0 is a big one but it might not look like anythings changed except for some 3D models of some places of interest and a much better zoom ability. So why is it such a big update? what has really been updated is the map data and other things that helps your nokia N96 find its way either walk, driving or taking public transport. Ovi Maps has a few other tricks like being able to view the weather of the place you are viewing. All in all it seems nokia maps has be reborn as navigation application rather a world viewing application that was adapted.

Overview: I think that Ovi maps 3.0 is pretty good everything seems to work fine. Installation is a bit of a processes and any map or licence you buy now won’t be compatible with the final release so you mite want to wait till they release that but they say that both versions should work just the same. In any case I find Ovi Maps much better than before but it still has a few little problems.

Description: Gps Track Location Log

Summary: First lets clear up what it is, RaceChrono is an application that uses your gps to find and track your location on race tracks. Just to be clear this is app is only for people who use local race tracks on these open days or even if your big into go-karts. RaceChrono has about 180 race tracks all around the world and you can even add a new one if you local is on the server. The many point of RaceChrono is to record you lap times and overall performance and will help you find the best possible time and how much Gforse is in each turn. RaceChrono isn’t only limited to cars and race tracks you can also use it for motorboat racing. With all the information you gather you should be able to work out the fastest way.

Overview: I don’t know what it is about this application that makes it so disireable (RaceChrono has been download 100,000 times) some places are saying its because its free but I’m not sure about that I think it has to do with the increase of open track days. As I said this application is free but if you think what it enables you to do and how much it would cost to do this in other ways, so if you use this application enough then you should probably donate a few quid.

Description: Tracks your phones location and trail using GPS

Summary: Since my wife’s N96 was stolen on Boxing day, I’ve been on the lookout for ways to trace handsets. Phone locator does just that. It’s an interesting application that was originally made to track the designer’s motorcycle tour around the Alps in 2007. Phone Locator uses your devices GPS to detect its location and uploads the information to the website where you can log in to view it. It also records the trail of the phone and the times the updates were received.

There are plenty of settings on this application that revolve around how the updates are to be sent. Some settings have an impact on battery life because the GPS is always active, but there are options to overcome this:

• Turn on ‘battery saver’! ‘battery saver’ turns off the GPS when the phone is stationary or the GPS signal is too low to get a fix. The GPS is turned back on when the phone connects to a different cell tower. This works best in metropolitan areas where the cells are small.

• Update less frequently! A big drain on the battery is the data context that is used to send data to the server. For example, if the application is set to ‘update every time I move’ it will drain the battery quicker than if it is set to update every 30 minutes.

After installation you are directed to the website where you can register your account. You can then log into the website on your pc and see where your phone is currently and where it has been at earlier times. You can choose to be ‘public’ where your location and trails are viewable to others or you can be ‘private’, and your location is only viewable when logged into your account.

Phone locator can be set to run at boot time so you can just forget about it. If you lose your phone, or it is stolen, you are then able to view its location providing a gps signal is or was available. It also runs in the background and doesn’t show up in running applications when closed.

You can also add other phones to your account that have the application installed to view family and friends locations and trails if you so wished.

I hope I never have to use this to try and trace a lost or stolen phone but I have it running just in case!

Please remember that data sent will incur charges to your phone bill unless you have an unlimited data plan with your provider.

Mark Guim posted an in-depth guide on how to play around with your Nokia Sports Tracker and Google Maps in order to achieve what Stavros does: Position Art.

Of course most of us aren’t as talented as Stavros, but now we can atleast give it a try.

Instructions

Step 1. Use Sports Tracker on your phone to record your location data. You can choose to run, walk, or whatever and it will record your path.

Step 2. When You are done, select ‘Upload to Service’ on the workout summary screen on your phone. The data will be uploaded to Sports Tracker online.

Step 3. On the Sports Tracker website, the route will be displayed on a map. To get this map on our blogs, we need to download the data as KML file by pressing the KML button above the map.

Step 4. Log in to Google Maps and go to ‘My Maps’ to create a new map. Import the KML file you downloaded in Step 3. Click Upload, then Done.

Step 5. Now we are getting the actual html code to embed in our blog. Click on “Link to this page” on the upper right corner, then “Customize and preview embedded map.”

Step 6. Adjust the look and size of the map. I usually reframe the map so the path is centered, then change the size to fit my blog’s width. I also select satellite view because think it looks cooler. As you make adjustments, the html code automatically changes.

Step 7. When you are done with the adjustments, just copy and paste the HTML code to your blog post. Now go make Stavros jealous by creating your own position art masterpiece then sharing it on your blog!

We’d love to say that we’re doing this comparison because Apple have announced a date to release the iPhone in Australia, but as you probably know, Apple is playing its cards very close to its chest.
The glossy-black finish hides buttons that illuminate from below…so cool. The sliding mechanism is much improved over the N95 – springy and snappy at the same time, it’s incredibly satisfying. The music controls illuminate upon sliding the N96 down. A kickstand pops out from the rear, making video and TV viewing convenient. Oh yea, and the TV (DVB-H) is smooth and crisp. Overall, the Nokia N96 is slightly (emphasis on slightly) longer than the N95, with about the same width and thickness, but feels lighter and more solid. And, speaking of solid, did I mention that much improved sliding mechanism? If you just bought a Nokia N95, I’m sorry to say that the Nokia N96 is the new hotness. The Nokia N95 is still the cat’s meow, but the N96 gets the lion’s share of the glory. That glossy-black finish might not be your cup of tea, but damn if I didn’t love it.
