Name: OBDScope

Description: Diagnostic Software

Summary: I don’t expect many people would even believe there’s an application like this, manly because people wouldn’t even think about it. I’m sure many of you at one point have had your car diagnosed by one of these bluetooth diagnostic tools but that only happens at the garage. OBDScope is a application for your nokia n96 and It can be used with an ELM chip based Bluetooth OBD adapter to connect to your car (that is if your car has this piece of kit, normally found in more expensive cars like bmw’s ect…). OBDScope can be used to get real time info about your engines speed, economy, RPM, temperature and power, the real use of this application is to find out if there’s any problems inside your engine so you know when to take it to the garage.

Overview: This is very much a gear head application and of course if your car doesn’t have the adaptor its useless. Never the less this application a very clever idea and as it was created as a hobby its a free application so if you think your car has the adaptor then its really worth a try. Read more

Nokia N96 App Review – Lie Detector

screenshot0347Name: Lie Detector

Description: Lie Detector

Summary: I’m sure we all have seen these cheap lie detector toys that are just for a bit of fun, but it always sounds nice if you had a real one. Now there is a Lie Detector for your nokia n96 that will help you decided if someone is lying to you over the phone. Lie Detector in theory works but is far from perfect, Lie detector will analyse your conversation and then match your voice and remove it so it can tell if someones voice pitch changes. Leaving the only thing you have to do is remember when you asked the question. The application really only works on yes and no answer questions so it mite turn out like quite a funny call.

Overview: I tried this application but unless my girlfriend is a raisin it didn’t really work so I guess its just more of a gimmick application. I don’t think its really designed to a gimmick application but come on for a phone lie detector what exactly do you expect, also lie detector is a free application (I can’t confirm its a free application but I can’t find anywhere to buy it so it should be free) so you mite as well give it a go, it could be a good bit of fun. Nokia N96 App Review – SnappLife

screenshot0329Name: SnappLife

Description: Desktop and Menu

Summary: There have been a few attempt to create an application to replace the desktop and menus of the nokia n96 to a more stylish one, probably the most successful one of these is the IPhone menu. SnappLife is a new application to totally replace the standard desktop so it can add new features and widgets and more shortcuts that you can handle. SnappLife has most of the abilities of the default menu except for a few little things but really there’s everything you need. The nicest thing about the application is the menu box which is really elegant and very attractive and another thing is the widgets which are really graphic and very entertaining. The background wallpaper can be changed just like you can with the theme background.

Overview: As far as a these type of applications go SnappLife is a good one, its very interesting and easy to use. The main problem I have with SnappLife is that it is slow really slow, it doesn’t stall but its like going back to when there was no firmware on our n96 and that’s just so useless but its free so there’s no need to complain but I guess its only for the people who don’t really use there phone that much and want an easier to use desktop. Nokia N96 App Review – Privus

July 28, 2009 by
Filed under Applications, Nokia, Review, S60, Software

screenshot0298Name: Privus Mobile

Description: Caller Id

Summary: Most people are happy with the the caller Id already on your nokia n96 but the truth is that you don’t have a caller Id, all you have is a contact recognition which will never show information the name of who’s calling. Privus is an application that can find out the name of the person that’s calling you, Privus has been around for a little while but has only recently been made for symbian. On other operating system it will tell you who’s calling but on the nokia N96 it will get you the name when you connect a to wifi. The application works well but requires a restart to completely install the application but can auto start from then on. To use this service you have to subscribe to Privus and pay for a month of use.

Overview: Privus is really only for business men that need to know who’s calling them but If you do want Privus it is going to cost you $5.99 a month or $59.95 for a year but does have a 10 day trial. Really I don’t think Privus is worth the cost but if you need to know then you don’t have much of a choice. You have to register at Privus for the application to work but that’s very quick. Nokia N96 App Review – Calc Sheet

screenshot0296Name: Calc Sheet

Description: Spreadsheet

Summary: We all deal with money and any senseable person will tell you that its important to manage your money, one of the best way to do this is by creating spreadsheet with all your income and expenditure. You can already buy an application called Quick Office which is really Microsoft Office for your phone but is only available at a high price. Calc Sheet is almost the same as Quick Offices excel, it can do all the same things like put in formulas and different colours and font types. One thing I found great was the way you select boxes to add, subtract ect.. Although in the end of the day Quick office is a much better more perfected Excel but this is definately worth its cost.

Overview: When I say its worth its cost thats a bit of a lie it is probably worth about 10 times it’s cost because its free so everyone can enjoy. I also should say that I really like these types of apps because they are so clever and I think anyone who has never used excel should try this to see whats possible. Calc Sheet is a .jar application but works very nicely on the nokia n96. Read more

Nokia N96 Game Review – Happy Lines

Name: Happy Lines

Genre: Arcade/Puzzle

Summary: Games for mobiles are made to entertain you while your alone with your nokia N96, but many games are now designed to be played competitively and that ends up making a game which is over complicated. Happy Lines is a back to basics arcade game with the simple goal of making five-in-a-row, the normal problem with arcade games is that they are repetitive and quite slow but on the upside they generally require more thought. Happy Lines isn’t like that, in Happy Lines you have to connect 5 balls my moving them to the required place but every time you move one 3 more balls appear on the screen, once you have five-in-a-row they disappear and give you more time and once you have filled the time bar you win and go to the next level, but if you don’t create five-in-a-row before the time runs out or you lose. In the end its like connect four with tetris and a clock and I was completely surprised how  it was.

Overview: I think this is my favorite arcade game ever, most arcade games I play I tend to put down every few minutes but this proper addictive. I think most games are should be fun, challenging, long lasting, cheap and they should work flawlessly. Happy Lines ticks all of those boxes and with all its little animations and other visual effects this game is a real pleasure to play and only costs $6. The game does have a trial for anyone interested but I should warn you that it is addictive. Read more

Nokia N96 Game Review – Captain Fatal 3D

screenshot0269Name: Captain Fatal

Genre: Action/Shooter

Summary: With N-gage gaming being thought of the best mobile gaming available it seems unlikely that you will find a good game that’s not for the N-gage on your nokia N96. Captain Fatal 3D is a new game that’s just like the old doom style game, picking up weapons and items while killing enemies as you navigate thought the maze of the map. The graphics are quite good the detail of the weapons is top notch but the levels and enemies have very little detail. Another problem I had was that the processor in the nokia n96 was just unable to keep up with the frame rate of the game. This isn’t the first game like this for nokia n96 and I just don’t believe these games will work right until phones have more power. I like the look of this game but would probably need to be played on a faster phone.

Overview: It’s a shame I have to say this but if you are planning to use this game on the N96 then don’t get it because it just won’t work fast enough. However anyone with a N95 will probably really like this game and the developers put in so much effort that I’m sure any player will be amazed at some of the graphics, if your not convinced then I’m providing a link to a video of the game in action. The game is also a .jar so it will work on loads of phones. Read more

Nokia N96 App Review – mobiEXPLORE

screenshot0246

Name: mobiEXPLORE

Description: mobile tour guide

Summary:  For most people traveling to another country is a happy vacation but with the lack of local information you can find yourself wondering around the streets aimlessly. mobiEXPLORE is an application that provides all information you could possibly need when abroad, information about the news, weather, activities, rooms, sights, shops, emergency numbers and maps. I know in my screenshots its all about the UK and obviously people are going to go to many other places but this is where mobiEXPLORE surprised me because they ave created mobiEXPLORE for 7 different countries and this is one of the biggest applications at 3MB so you know the developers were busy. mobiEXPLORE also has a very nice interface with detailed animations that look nice on the nokia n96

Overview: I’m still a little socked by this application mainly because its free yet it was developed with so much detail and for so many countries. I should mention that some of the other countries it is developed for aren’t that popular but they do have this application for Italy and Croatia which should be popular. There is just one thing that annoyed me and that was the lack of cites it covers and if it doesn’t have your location then its pointless. Read more
