screenshot0065Name: RaceChrono

Description: Gps Track Location Log

Summary: First lets clear up what it is, RaceChrono is an application that uses your gps to find and track your location on race tracks. Just to be clear this is app is only for people who use local race tracks on these open days or even if your big into go-karts. RaceChrono has about 180 race tracks all around the world and you can even add a new one if you local is on the server. The many point of RaceChrono is to record you lap times and overall performance and will help you find the best possible time and how much Gforse is in each turn. RaceChrono isn’t only limited to cars and race tracks you can also use it for motorboat racing. With all the information you gather you should be able to work out the fastest way.

Overview: I don’t know what it is about this application that makes it so disireable (RaceChrono has been download 100,000 times) some places are saying its because its free but I’m not sure about that I think it has to do with the increase of open track days. As I said this application is free but if you think what it enables you to do and how much it would cost to do this in other ways, so if you use this application enough then you should probably donate a few quid. Nokia N96 App Review – Power Mp3

screenshot0045

Name: power mp3

Description: Mp3 Player

Summary: I posted a previous version of this application a while back but then it didn’t have an equalizer now however it does so it makes for a perfect Mp3 player for your Nokia N96. If you have use Power Mp3 before you will know its based on the original media player but it has a few things that that’s not included in the original one. The first addition this has is the use of short cuts using the numeral keypad, Power Mp3 also has a mood setting that you can define for each song and rate it as well. Other things that Power Mp3 has is a preamp, bass boost, loudness and stereo widening. Another feature of Power Mp3 is the skins and themes that you can apply that gives Power Mp3 nice interface.

Overall: I know its hard to change media players and even though this mp3 player is better bit quite a distance but I just can see it actually replacing the original one.  What I will tell you is that this is a beta at the moment so you can download it for free but I think when the full version is out it will probably cost a few quid so it is really worth downloading. Name: Frozen Bubble Twisted beta 2

Description: Colour matching game

Summary: Most symbian users have heard of Samir but with the new firmware in the n96 all of his previous applications don’t work for us. However that is starting to change FB twisted is a very simple game based on combining 3 bubbles of the same colour, but in stead of pressing left to right all you have to do is twist the phone left and right. The game also has a few other new little features like the more bubbles you poop the bigger the vibration as well as a volume/stereo control. You can also set you own music by putting a file called fbtwisted.mp3 in c :\Data\Others.

,

,

Overview: Well this is a Samir application which means its going to be good. Ok for anyone who is looking for a serous game there is a good few n-gage games out but anyone looking for a bit of fun look no further. This beta is free and I found this version particularly addictive just because you are never sure about your accuracy.

If you have never head of Samir please check out some of his work here.

BBC will start streaming live tv in the UK

Great news for all UK residents, the BBC has now started streaming live TV for n96 and the 5800.

First before you get too excited you should know that the resolution is only 176 x 144 and that’s almost half our screen size so there is plenty of room for development. Saying that not only do you get the standard bbc channels (bbc 1,bbc2 ect…) but you all so get all the free to view channels as well(bbc 3,bbc 4, itv 2,itv 3, sky 3 ect…).  The problem is that you will probably still need to connect to wifi to update channels and other information. It sounds like its the kind of thing that will only work when it wants too but unfortunately I am unable to test this service as my phone is getting fixed so it would be great if any UK users let us know there experiences with this.

To use this service you will either need to download this or you can visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/live/tv/ on your n96.

This is a big step up for n96 users since the DVB-H TV in the n96 is unused so it made it just like the n95 so personally I’m delighted with this and hope that more European countries avail of this.

Have you checked this post about the Nokia N86 8MP camera and video samples?

Nokia Aplication review – Hour Power

screenshot0006Name: hourpower

Description: talking clock

Summary: If you all don’t know the n96 has a built in talking clock all you have to do is hold the right menu button and ask you phone “what time is it” and after a few seconds of confirming  it will tell you the time, great. Is that ideal, well no its not. I’m sure many people would love to know the time with out having to wait for confirmation and I’m sure many people don’t want to have to talk to there phone to know the time.  Probably the best talking clock would have to be one that will tell you the time instantly with the touch of a button. So here’s Hour Power its a very simple application that will just tell you the time without any fuss or delay. HourPower uses the text to speech just like the built in one so the voice and language can be changed to whatever you want.

Overall: Thinking that this is completely useless is the wrong attitude to have towards it, imagine putting this application as one of your shortcuts one press and you know the time. Also the application doesnt run until you turn it on but once that’s done you will here the time and it will exit. It is also a little more complicated that what I first thought in the sence that the first time you select it will give you options about the time such as turning it into a 24/12 hour clock but after that any time you select the application it will just tell you the time.

HourPower is a free application and is very small so there’s no harm in trying

you can download it free here

And if you have any questions about HourPower feel free to comment in the forum.

How to remove dust from the N96′s screen

January 28, 2009 by

Jonbaker is once again at it, and he has devised a simple way of removing all the dust that is collected on the N96′s display.

Here’s what he says at the forum.

I had a build up of dust under the screen somehow and so decided to clean it. I got the T6 and took out the 4 screws and then carefully pulled off the front cover. But I have just discovered this is not neccessary!

The screen cover actualy comes off with ease using a little tool. Nokia have one called the SRT6 and is £8 from here:

http://www.phatphones.com/nokia-srt6-phone-opening-tool.htm

What a rip off! I went into a little phone shop where i work and got one very similar made by BAKU, (dunno who they are ) for £1

Anyhow. All you do is slide the tool in between the screen and the phones silver edge and run it up and down, this releases the catches. I started on the right hand side, then to the top, then down the left side. Once the catches are releases the front screen comes out.

Then the battle begins! Getting rid of all dust! everytime i put it back on there was a bit waving at me Sad Highly annoying considering the amount of films i watch on my phone. I got there in the end though.

Also, this must mean that the part is replaceable if it becomes servely scratched, i’m sure the part number is on it but i didn’t make a note of it.

The part has some sticky backing on it near the top around the ear speaker but this comes off easy and doesn’t effect it’s stability once back on.

I hope someone finds this useful if you get this problem

I’m pretty sure many will, Jon, thanks!

What to try if you have a strange problem with the N96

N96 user, jonbaker to the rescue, posted from the forum:

In most cases the following should fix any issues you are having with the N96. Firstly you must get the latest firmware, if the firmware isn’t available for your product code then change it using the guide on this forum (this will invalidate the Nokia warranty though)

If you have the latest firmware then try this:

1. Format mass memory (back up your files first because you will lose them)

2. Format the phone memory (hard reset) again backup your files

3. If the above didn’t fix it, re-install the firmware.

4. Still no fix? Take it back, it is knackered!… probably

From personal experience a mass memory format sorted out my phones problem of not refreshing the music library and not being able to delete music. My wife’s phone wouldn’t light up most of the time and the formatting wouldn’t fix that so we went with option 4 and got a new one, problem solved!

If you have any doubts or questions, feel free to ask jonbaker or any other of the forum members.
