Nokia N96 App Review – Handywi

screenshot0074

Name: Handywi

Description: Wifi Connection Manager

Summary: “no gateway reply” words that I hate, words that I see nearly every time I use the Internet on my phone. Normally I would just refresh the system but I wanted something with a more stable connection for the nokia N96, this is what I came up with. Handywi is exactly what you thing it is, it can find all the near by wifi connections and helps you connect and so far has not shown me any error messagesHandywi has another side to it, when your in a location that you like you can use Handywi to record your location and then you can upload them to your list of Landmarks and then you can view them on your map. I think Handywi is a must have application if you have any problems using wifi.

Overview: I was kind of expecting something a little better from this application it give you a more stable connection but I think that it makes the Internet slower which is really annoying. Handywi is free but its just not what I exactly wanted but I will keep it on my phone just for the times that the Internet is acting up. If you are going to use Handywi then note that the connection it uses is stored in the uncategorized section when connecting to wifi. Read more

Nokia N96 App Review – WorldMate

Name: WorldMate

Description:  Travel Itinerary

Summary: If you are traveling, whether it is to work or different or even across the border there’s some information that’s handy to have. This is where WorldMate comes in, WorldMate is Collection of excellent applications all in one place that updates automatically giving you the latest times, weather forecast, directions, flight information and the latest currency rates. All this seems only useful if you are traveling across countries, but my favourite part of this application mite change that. Weather forecasts are great but the only problem is that they can manly be found on newspapers, radio and TV which makes them a bit out of the way, WorldMate brings this straight to your Nokia N96 but instead of showing you the forecast it tells it to you. WorldMate can make these reports twice a day at your chosen time and your chosen days so you could wake up to the nice lady telling you the weather without doing anything.

Overview: Believe it or not this application is free but has limited abilities compared to the gold version, but you would have to be Serious about your business travel to get that because it costs $30 a year. Personally I only have the application for the weather forecast but for anyone that travels a lot this could be your next best friend. Another thing That I noticed is the speed of update which is very smooth and had a very stable connection. Read more

Nokia N96 Game Review – Four In A Line

Name: Four In A Line

Description: Free strategy game

Summary: N-gage is know as the pinnacle of gaming for mobiles pushing graphics to the limit but many of these games don’t have any type of multi-player that you can use with your friends sitting next to you. Four In A Line is exactly the same as connect four but you can play against the computer or your friend. This game has a few things you wouldn’t expect to find on a free game, like the ability to play over sms or bluetooth against friends and also the ability of the AI should be noted as it can sometimes be unbeatable.

Overview: When I say “free strategy game” there is a catch and that is that it’s an ad based application so you have to view a few advertisements but I wouldn’t say that’s a problem it just mite put a few people off  but its a quality game and if you put all the registration and that stuff aside you end up with a really neat game.

Nokia N96 App Review – Nokia Energy Profiler

Name: Nokia Energy Profiler

Description: Battery consumption Monitor

Summary: I’m still a little hooked on this new firmware, one thing that the Nokia N96 has always had problems with is the batteryNokia Energy Profiler can measure the consumption of your battery quite precisely which results in seeing which applications require the most battery to operate. Nokia Energy Profiler will also display how much battery time is left. The application itself is designed for application developers so don’t be expecting it to have a nice UI or normal settings. Really this is a pointless Application, unless you concerned about your Battery.

Overview: This is quite an interesting application, it would be nice if anybody who installed this application to post up their average battery consumption and what applications are running, My phone on average uses 0.78w. I will probably be using this application regularly just to find out how much battery an application uses so I mite be referring to this application a bit if I come across any application that uses either a lot or a little battery. If anyone whats this application then there’s nothing stopping you because its free and made by nokia so you know it will work Read more

Nokia N96 App Review – UCWEB

Name: UCWEB

Description: Mobile Web Browser

Summary: There are a few mobile web browsers and choosing which one to use poses the same challenge as choosing a web browsers for your PC. In my view the pre-installed one is like IE, opera is well opera then this is Mozilla. The level of compatibility and with all the options are customizable, the big thing that this browser pulls of is the download manger which till now was unheard of in mobiles. UCWEB almost combines all the greatest abilities of all the other web browsers so its a real threat to all the others. The best thing to note about this web browser is that it has so many abilities but its still able to keep a clean and easy to use interface. All in all UCWEB is a stunning web browser and I think that this should make most other web browsers learn a thing or two.

Overview: I know many people would be inclined just stick with the original pre-installed one but don’t I would recommend either UCWEB or Skyfire both of these are faster and easier to use over any other web browser. I have a good mind to say that that UCWEB is better than Skyfire but I haven’t been using it long enough to pass a full judgement but its a real winner. To top it of its free so you’ll have to be crazy not to download. Read more

Nokia N96 App Review – Slide Screensaver

screenshot0068Name: Slide Screensaver

Description: Custom screen saver

Summary: With the Nokia N96 and in fact most N series have so many multimedia abilities and one of the biggest is pictures and images. After taking a few photos of friends, parties, pets and scenery they are just stored in your phone waiting to be viewed. Slide Screensaver lets you use any picture on your phone as a screen saver but instead of ust one picture you can have as many as you like. The application also has various effects and transitions with an adjustable intermissions from 2-60 seconds. You can also randomize all your pictures and set the display between landscape and portrait.

Overview: I can see why  Slide Screensaver is popular, I like look at photos every now and again and how many times have you looked at your phone and just seen a blank screen this application will every so often show you a picture that brings back a memory so it could be quite enjoyable. The only hesitation I have with this is that I think that this will kill your battery but it mite not be that bad, give it ago because its free and what just what we like.

Nokia N96 App Review – LightSabre

screenshot0053Name: LightSabre

Description: Motion Sensor App

Summary: Lightsaber was one of the first application to use the motion sensor but it only worked with the older operating  systems. Now however Lightsabre works on the nokia n96, even thought this application is completely useless if has a very high fun factor. Lightsabre is an application that turns your phone into surprise surprise a lightsabre with all different sounds that are changed with different movements and you can make a striking sound by pressing any number. If your a not into playing around then stop reading now because this is purely for messing around with a mate. This new version works with all the latest phones like the N96, N97, N85, N79, 5800 so there mite a few more people with it around.

Overview: I love this application its so useless that you’ll open it when ever you come across it in you menu just for a bit of a laugh. The main reason I did a post about Lightsaber is because of the boom in motion sensor applications and as most of them are new only a few are getting updated so its nice to see this updated.

Nokia N96 Game Review – Bobba

April 15, 2009 by
Filed under Games, Nokia, Review, S60, Software, Symbian

screenshot0046

Name: Bobba (beta)

Description:  3D virtual world,

Summary: Bobba is a first for a mobile online gaming, sure there’s n-gage arena but that all about gaming. Bobba turns your N96 into a whole world which people can get together, chat, work, party, date and meet new people. At the moment the bobba is still a beta so don’t think that this is all that this game has to offer. This N96 game is a great free game, bobba is all about designing your own location and inviting a few people around you can customize your own avatar. The location you decide to live can be modified with the construction kit and what some people have done so far is pretty unimpressive. So I would say this has some potential and could entertain for a while or just a place to talk to a mate or just some random girl.

,

Overview: While Bobba is a new concept it still lacks any sort challenge so you mite get bored of it quite quick but is a new experience. The graphics are acceptable and the game works well on the n96, it does have a few bugs with a few unexpected crashes but all was ok in the end.

Nokia N96 App Review – Skyfire

April 13, 2009 by
Filed under Applications, Nokia, Review, S60, Software, Symbian

screenshot0032

Name: skyfire 0.9

Description: Mobile, Web Browser

Summary: The nokia N96 has so many features that requires the internet but even so these symbian phones don’t have the greatest web browser so here’s a replacement. Skyfire is a great little web browser which is nice and fast with a lot of helpful links and button shortcuts. Normally when any N96 user asks me what web browser to use I tell them opera mini. With this update I think its got a step or two ahead, things like facebook and twitter have now at your home page as well as the latest news stories. The shear speed of it is worth checking out its still a bit slow but its fast enough not to annoy you.  The thing I think nokia n96 users will appreciate most is the integration to all other service like YouTube, hulu, BBC  news ect..

Overview: When I saw a new update for this I was hoping for some new experience while web browsing and in fairness I found it but its hard to say how good it is, it dose feel as free as any other web browser and it doesn’t have the page switch that many people like. All in all great web browser I cant tell you which browser to use as it depends on how you use the Internet. I would advise anyone using a the N96 to try it out and see how they like it, it is free so you have no excuse.

Nokia Aplication review – Hour Power

screenshot0006Name: hourpower

Description: talking clock

Summary: If you all don’t know the n96 has a built in talking clock all you have to do is hold the right menu button and ask you phone “what time is it” and after a few seconds of confirming  it will tell you the time, great. Is that ideal, well no its not. I’m sure many people would love to know the time with out having to wait for confirmation and I’m sure many people don’t want to have to talk to there phone to know the time.  Probably the best talking clock would have to be one that will tell you the time instantly with the touch of a button. So here’s Hour Power its a very simple application that will just tell you the time without any fuss or delay. HourPower uses the text to speech just like the built in one so the voice and language can be changed to whatever you want.

,

screenshot0008screenshot0007

Overall: Thinking that this is completely useless is the wrong attitude to have towards it, imagine putting this application as one of your shortcuts one press and you know the time. Also the application doesnt run until you turn it on but once that’s done you will here the time and it will exit. It is also a little more complicated that what I first thought in the sence that the first time you select it will give you options about the time such as turning it into a 24/12 hour clock but after that any time you select the application it will just tell you the time.

HourPower is a free application and is very small so there’s no harm in trying

you can download it free here

And if you have any questions about HourPower feel free to comment in the forum.
